Come fly and camp with us at Sport Kite Camp - Kill Devil Hills, NC

Read more Sport Kite Camp is an event co-hosted by Sportkite.org and Fortuna Found. The concept is to create a gathering for sport kite fliers. One that feels like an adult summer camp, with shared meals, activities, and a chance to really embrace the whole experience of Sport Kites. It is intended to be for all levels of sport kite fliers from the brand new to the well versed. It breaks down the barriers to entry, gets rid of the clipboards and work requirements, and just makes it a space for a bunch of people to love on sport kites! While the flying is important, so is the chance to explore some of the local highlights, spending evenings together sharing the stoke over a meal, and gathering every morning over a homecooked breakfast to discuss the day. This event was held in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and was made incredibly special by the ~25 individuals that traveled from all over the United States to really lean in. Spring Snow Single Line Kite Flying on the White River

Read more Spring is here, but there is still a bit of winter to be found up in the mountains at one of my favorite places, the edge of the White River in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Was out walking deep in the woods, but couldn't pass up this chance to fly on this forest service road bridge. Lake of the Woods Kite Festival - Southern Oregon Frozen Lake Kite Flying!

Just a little kite in the snow by the river

Flying my iFlite in the del Norte Coastal Redwoods

Read more This was one of my most difficult spots to fly, it may not look like much, but the heavy fog and the natural uplift coming up the bluff made it hard to find my rhythm. I kept trying to force the kite to fly, to be where I wanted it to be.... instead of just letting it be and guide me through the movements. It all felt like a great metaphor for how I have been feeling with coming out of the Covid pandemic. There is still a lot of beauty out there in the world, and instead of forcing it to be present, I simply need to give in and let the beauty flow into me. Be open to the world blossoming and sharing it's pace... not mine. Perhaps the next video I share things will flow a bit more smoothly....so why share this one? Because, we can only truly experience the 'light' by experiencing the 'dark'. There is nothing fancy to the flying, just continuing my exploration of connecting with the world around me. This isn't about forcing the kite to fly in the conditions, it is a dance, a partnership, it is letting the woods and nature speak to me on how the kite and myself should find ourselves in the moment. Just like your first awkward steps in that first dance, you stumble, you push, you try and impose your will on the moment. Read more What do you do when you wake up first thing in the morning, roll out of bed (in the back of the car) onto the beach and the wind is cranking? Make coffee first.... or go fly a kite? Why not both?!?!?! While hanging out on the beach recently I got the pot of water boiling for my coffee and headed out to fly with a Prism Quantum 2.0 and a 75ft tube tail in 15+mph winds. Too early in the morning to care about getting fancy with my flying; just going for loops and feeling the pull of the kite. Sometimes that is all it is about, is shaking off the sleep with some simple flying and sitting back to enjoy a hot cup of coffee. Kite Flying on the Air Currents of the Icicle River - Leavenworth, Washington.

Read more Standing on a rock over the swollen Icicle River I let my kite drift and find the invisible natural movements. The river spoke to me, and guided myself and my kite through its pulsations... its breath... its being. Most of my regular beaches and trails have been seeing an increase in foot traffic with the better weather, and more folks looking to get outside and enjoy social distanced time in nature. I still have a few hidden haunts that require a bit of trekking or driving to, and well, here is one of them. Many people are familiar with the nearby town of Leavenworth. These days the Icicle River Valley and Leavenworth are considered the same incorporated town, but when it was first established a small remote community survived on the banks of this river. When the railroad finally made its way to Leavenworth the two towns combined. In future years Leavenworth went through a major revamp to become the little Bavarian styled haven in the Cascade mountains, and Icicle River Valley became an epic playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Some of the best hiking, climbing, and camping can be found either in the Icicle Valley, or at least the journey to them starts there. There is a special connection one can feel throughout the valley, and it is a place that has a special influence on me. Flying my Kite on Mt Constitution - Orcas Island

Read more My 'home', or at least where my heart considers home, is a small island in Washington State called Orcas Island. On Orcas is one of the oldest state parks in Washington State (Moran State Park) and in the middle of it sits Mt Constitution. The view from the top is one of the finest marine views in the world, and on a clear day you can see 360 degrees. It is easy to see all of the other islands, the majestic glacier capped volcanoes of the Cascade mountains, our neighbors in Canada, and so much more. My family homesteaded this island back in roughly in the 1870's and has lived here ever sense. I spent much of my childhood playing in the woods, climbing over rocks in the beaches, being free in the wilderness. There are a few places I visit every time I go back home, and the park is one of them. Something about it feeds my soul, it replenishes, it cleanses, it 'is'. Flying my kite here was cathartic. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to shake off the emotions and the stress. Sometimes it takes a moment before the flying evens out and the kite flies true..... before I feel true. I hope you enjoy this moment from the top of Constitution, this is a little slice of home. By the way, Moran State Park is celebrating 100 years this year!! Originally it was a gift from Robert Moran (who met and was influenced by John Muir) to the state, but it has grown over the years and is truly a crowning jewel in the 'public lands' system. It is filled with the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corp, and acres of unmarred old growth timber, waterfalls, Kokanee Salmon, beautiful freshwater lakes, and epic mount biking/hiking/horseback riding trails. Hiking and Kite Flying in a 'Land of Death'

Read more CORRECTION!!! The US nuclear bombs were not made AT Hanford, the plutonium for the bombs was refined at Hanford. I decided to mix things up a little with my hikes and explore a rather vacant landscape that makes up part of this great state I call home. The Hanford Reach (also known as the Hanford National Historic Park) is the site of a massive industrial complex that was used to fabricate, test, and refine Plutonium. Plutonium that would later be used in the dawn of the Nuclear age, and the dropping of the bombs by US Forces on Nagasaki, Japan. The facility is no longer functioning and has been decommissioned (after a complicated history involving more nuclear weapons). The area surrounding the reactors, better known as the 'Reach' has been established as an 'involuntary park'. The surroundings are beautiful, desolate, and serene. As the Columbia River cuts a path about 50 miles long through the landscape unobstructed, cutting into an area called the white bluffs, which formed a series of sand dunes perched on top of a cliff face. For eons this had been a place of reverence and fishing for the native Wanapum, Yakama, and other Confederate Tribes. Many people had called this place home, and they were all removed, all displaced, and all cut off from ever returning. In the recent past, underground waste tanks have been leaking radioactive waste into the groundwater, and thus the river. Continuing to affect the people and the land for centuries to come. It is a beautiful landscape.... and a painful one. Beautifully wild, forever marred. I don't believe in ghosts, but it is hard to not feel like the weight of a thousand ghosts were there watching me walk alone across the grasslands. Finding my Zen With My Kite on the Ridge Top

Read more This hike to the ridgetop at sunrise was a much needed break from the world and my own anxiety. It was cold, it was raw, I was bundled up, the flying is nothing spectacular. Did it take all of my anxiety away? Did it banish my fear? Did it console my aching heart? Nope.... but it put me in the moment. In fact in the beginning of the video you can see some anguish in my face. I am a little clunky, I keep looking to the camera, it feels like I am going through the motions. The video is only a few minutes long, but I spent a good half hour out there flying. I finally had to leave because I was cold and was losing feeling in my hands. Hiking and Kite Flying in Ancient Lakes, Washington

Read more The Ancient Lakes in Central Washington are a beautiful series of lakes that cascade from one into the next down basalt cliffs into a deep coulee near the Columbia River. I hiked in about 3 miles to a small plain near one of the lakes, found an open spot, and flew my kite in the 1mph wind on 50 foot lines. The hike wasn't easy. The flying wasn't easy. The anxiety over maybe getting shot by a hunter...wasn't easy. But.... It was worth it, I am very glad I did it. Kite Flying World Record Attempt - Bill Brosius flying 72 kites

Read more Bill Brosius of Olympia, Washington, is attempting to set a new Record of one man flying stacks of dual line kites. In this attempt, he is flying 3 stacks of 24 kites, totaling 72 kites. On 7.17.2020 the winds were predicted to be 15 mph, perfect for an attempt. However, the winds on the beach stayed around the 5 mph mark, with only one little bump to 8 mph. Bill attempted late in the afternoon to get the stacks airborne, but the full flight was not possible in such low winds. He will be trying again in the near future. Unique Fighter Kite at the World Kite Museum

Read more Hanging out at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach, Washington, and I found this uniquely painted Afghani Fighter Kite. There are two of them in the collection, and the only two I have ever seen like this! It appears they were donated to the World Kite Museum in 1996 and were made by a gentlemen by the name of 'Basir' that was well known in the fighter kite groups in California. Kite Flying on the Winter Trails

Read more This weekend there was a winter storm high in the cascades that brought with it a lot of snow. I headed up into the woods and strapped on my snowshoes and hiked deep into the solitude in waist deep snow, sinking to my knees with each step. It was peaceful, beautiful, and after boot packing a small trail along the river, I felt like it was the perfect time to take a break and pull out my kite. Kite flying in a winter wonderland - A Journey to fly kites everywhere

Read more I honestly believe in the idea that kite flying can happen anywhere at anytime, and that means that I try to have a kite with me everywhere I go. Including, snowshoeing up on a mountain ridge in 18 inches of fresh snow. It does make for some interesting kite flying because I couldn't easily move around in the snow. Nothing fancy with this kite flying, just a moment in the mountains I wanted to share with all of you. This whole journey of flying kites everywhere and anywhere is really helping me to live by the Fortuna Motto: Connect, Discover, Explore. 'Art as Kites' at the MINKA Gallery with Drachen Foundation

Read more This weekend I traveled down to Tacoma, Washington to check out an art exhibit featuring some of my friends and mentors from the Drachen Foundation. MINKA is proud to present "Art as Kites," an exuberant exhibit of wind-turning highfliers by Scott Skinner, Greg Kono, and Jose Sainz! These three diverse artists give new meaning to the eternal question, "Do you think this idea will fly?" The answer is, "Of course!" "Art as Kites" will be on view from Oct. 4 through Dec. 31, 2019 at MINKA art Gallery in Tacoma, WA. This show is presented with support from the Seattle-based Drachen Foundation, for 25 years devoted to spreading knowledge about kites worldwide. Rainy Kite Flying at the Whidbey Island Kite Festival

Read more Had a chance to head down to the Whidbey Island Kite Festival this weekend. Saturday was beautiful weather, with sun and laughter, Sunday.... was rain and weird winds. Scott Davis set up one of his high end sport kites (a Jinx - designed by Paul de Bakker) and dragged me out to do an impromptu mega fly. The winds were somewhere between non existent and teasing puffs that rolled off over the trees. Just came back from the Washington State International Kite Festival (WSIKF) and celebrating the inaugural We Fly Global Kite Challenge. So Exhausted and so full of gratitude and trying to make heads and tails of it while jumping right back into my regular job. Amazing work everybody... really amazing work. Site survey of an abandoned Asylum for some creepy kite flying

Read more This weekend I found myself hiking around an old abandoned Asylum/Mental institute. The place was once home to the hospital grounds and the working farms. The housing and hospital area has been re-purposed into a juvenile facility, but the dairy barns, farm, and other miscellaneous buildings have been abandoned. The rain was coming down pretty heavy as I climbed around and explored the location as a site for some future creepy kite flying! Really excited to do a video here with kites! Read more Took a short weekend trip to head to the beach in Kalaloch, Washington. A small campground on the beach surrounded by the wilderness of the Olympic Penninsula. Through the magic of flight, I have traveled the world, met countless people that have influenced the person I am today, and have ultimately found true love. I believe that it is my job to help spread happiness in the world, and elevate those around me during the short time that I am here. It isn’t through luck that I found my way here, it is through taking a chance at every opportunity, even if I knew I might fail. I fly just about anything, but love flying indoor single lines. In the last year I have been helping out the AKA as a Director-At-Large, managing the social media side of the house, and as the acting National Kite Month Chairmen. I have also recently launched my own kitebuilding and kite flying business, and I am completely blown away by the resources, support, and people that have chosen to be a part of that journey. South Padre Island Kite Festival

Read more The South Padre Island Kite Festival is hosted by B & S Kites on South Padre Island, Texas. It was a wonderful event, even with the small amount of rain that came through and soaked the flying fields. Still, the invited fliers put on a show for the thousands of 'winter texans' in attendance. The event is well attended, well organized, and an absolute blast for the fliers and the audience. #10 South Padre Island Indoor Kite Event

Read more The South Padre Island Kite Festival is hosted by B & S Kites on South Padre Island, Texas. It kicks off with an indoor show at the Convention Center that has sold out year after year. This year -2019- there was about 12 performances to entertain the roughly 850 people in attendance. The stands were packed and there was a wait-list at the door waiting to get in (last we checked it was over 120 people waiting for a ticket to become available!!) The event is well attended, well organized, and an absolute blast for the fliers and the audience. 2019 Windless Indoor Kite Festival Demonstration

It then becomes about how well you can choreograph on the fly! This particular performance was not a part of the official competition, it was just for fun! #8 A visit to see Jacob Hashimoto

Read more On a trip to New York City, I stopped by Governors Island to see the new installation by Jacob Hashimoto . It is comprised of 15,000 kites suspended from the chapel ceiling, and is absolutely breathtaking. Seeing one of these pieces in person has been high on my bucket list ever since discovering his work some years ago. I spent nearly an hour just looking at the piece, watching it breathe, soaking it all in, living in the moment. Kite Flying in Ocean Shores - with Paul de Bakker

Read more Come with us on a trip to the beach at Ocean Shores, Washington. Nothing formal, just a moment on the beach flying, and doing the thing we love. Paul de Bakker has won many stunt kite competitions in the past, both regionally, and nationally, but his heart is always on the beach just flying and doing the the thing he loves. "I try to be all around in my style, I try to fly newer school ticks or maneuvers. I try to fly old school. I try to incorporate the precision and the control in there. I try to fly fast, I try to fly slow. Everything tho, has got to have a purpose, it has to look like it was intended to be that way even if it wasn't, ultimately." The kite in this video is a Paul de Bakker designed kite called the 'Hydra'. You can find them at your favorite kite store or online.

#7 Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival

Read more Come along with me - Nic - on a quick weekend trip to Lincoln City, Oregon for the Summer Kite Festival. This festival happens twice a year (Summer and Fall) and has been one of our favorite to attend. It is a festival that is meant to be a show for all of the visitors and tourists coming through. That makes it a bit different than other kite events that are more focused on kite fliers getting together and hanging out. Something special happens tho, when kite fliers are standing center stage and giving a show, and the public is encouraged to interact with them. Dance with them, fly with them. Kerala India with H2O

Follow along with Nic O'Neill to Kerala India on a visit sponsored by Helping Hands Organisation (H20) Helping Hands was hosting a kite festival in tandem with One India Kite team for the children. They say you can't plan for it all, and this trip was a perfect example of that. On day one Nic lost her voice and was unable to speak for the remainder of the trip.
